The fundamentals

Free walking tours are tip-based. The guide earns zero unless you hand over cash at the end. Most operators take a small cut and the rest goes directly to the guide. If you enjoyed the tour, tipping is not optional in spirit, only in law.

The exact how-to at the end of the tour

  1. The guide gives a closing speech (1 to 2 minutes, usually mentions paid tours)
  2. The guide steps off to one side and tippers queue up
  3. You walk up with the cash folded in your hand
  4. Make eye contact, hand over the money, and say a short thank you
  5. If you want to ask for restaurant recommendations, this is the moment

Phrases that work: "Thanks, that was great" / "Really enjoyed it, here is a little for coffee" / the local version of thank you (danke, gracias, grazie, obrigado).

Cash vs card

Always cash if possible. Card readers (SumUp, iZettle, Square) charge the guide 2 to 3 percent per transaction. Having small local bills (10s and 20s) shows respect and avoids awkwardness.

If you only have card, tip 5 percent more to cover the fee. If you only have a big bill, ask the guide politely if they have change. Most do.

What never to do

  • Do not tip during the tour. It signals you are leaving early
  • Do not tip in a currency different from the country unless absolutely necessary
  • Do not ask the guide to break a 100 EUR note. That is the tour company problem, not yours. Ask a nearby cafe instead
  • Do not leave without tipping and say "I did not bring cash". Every major city has ATMs at every metro station

After the tip: the ask

After handing the tip, you can ask the guide anything. Best restaurants for tonight. Safe neighborhoods. Where to get real coffee. Guides remember people who tip well and often share their personal spots that are not on TripAdvisor.

Frequently asked questions

Cash. Card payments cost the guide 2 to 3 percent in fees (SumUp, iZettle, Square). Cash goes directly to the guide. If you only have card, tip an extra 5 percent to cover the fee.

After. Guides wrap up with a 1 to 2 minute speech (paid tour pitches, thanks, meeting point for follow-ups) and then stand there while people come up individually. Queue up with the rest.

Yes, if you took the tour and enjoyed it. Guides earn nothing else. Not tipping is equivalent to walking out of a restaurant without paying for an entrance dish. Even a small tip (5 EUR) is better than nothing.
